The government of Kenya, through the ministry of education, has provided some public learning spaces within and in the immediate vicinity of the Dandora Slums. There are only five government primary schools. This cannot accommodate all the children in Dandora slums Nairobi. Since the introduction of free primary education, and the 100% transition policy, the classrooms in the government schools are overcrowded, which has watered down the quality of education offered in these schools. 57 Community based schools, which fall under the Alternate Provision of Primary Education & Training (APBET), have been initiated within the slums, to offset the pressure on the few government primary schools.
Most community based schools are not able to generate sufficient income or surpluses to facilitate infrastructural development, hence children end learning in hazardous, congested and sometimes unhygienic environments. A big percentage of these schools is dependent on external funding or support as the parents and guardians of the children from the informal settlements of the Dandora Slums live under $1 per day, and are considered to be under the influence of a high incidence of poverty.
Our approach is to complement basic education provision with psycho-social support, as most of these children come from traumatised backgrounds arising out of negative coping mechanisms developed by the slum dwellers to counter abject poverty, for example drugs/substance abuse, chronic alcoholism of parents, and prostitution and the accompanying scourge of H.I.V/AIDS. Food is also provided.
An improved learning space will make it easier for the Dandora Slums children better access their right to survival, development and participation in life after school.
